Who is Saphire Oshun?
I am Saphire Oshun, singer, actor, dancer, songwriter, poet, playwright, teaching artist, and drag performer. I grew up in Bayonne NJ, where I started singing and performing at 5 years old. Over the past 21 years I have grown into myself and have become very comfortable in my skin as a queer artist and trans woman of color.
My mom was born in Alexandria, Egypt and my dad is both African American and Cherokee and was raised in Newark, New Jersey. I have studied musical theatre as well as several other artistic mediums throughout my life. One of my proudest achievements was receiving my BFA in Musical Theatre at the University of Miami.
I currently work as a teaching artist in both Jersey City and Brooklyn teaching acting, voice, and dance. On the weekends I perform in Drag, as well as sing at Jazz Clubs, and write and produce my own songs. My single “Spade of Spades” has been out for over a year on Apple Music, Spotify, as well as most streaming platforms. Art is my religion, I create as an act of survival in order to keep my joy, passion, and inner spirit alive.
Although performing is my first love, this past summer I had a staged reading of my play “Club Chakra” performed at the Jersey City Theatre Center, as well as several children’s plays written and directed by myself; performed at The Nimbus Arts Center.
It is my absolute pleasure to work and collaborate with artists. I hope that whoever is reading this feels an open invitation to my heart and soul.
